Today’s GM Tip: How To Create Dynamic Battle Maps

A 1-Minute Read

My game on Sunday proved to me again why a bit of combat prep matters.

One encounter featured a collapsing bridge, tricky terrain with barnacles and kelp, and a channel with strong tidal water. The other encounter offered only minimal terrain and lacked interesting routes, positions, and discoveries. Guess which one turned into a static slugfest?

In most combats we form a front line, stop moving, and hack until one side can only be reached via Speak With Dead.

When that happens, the combat consumes 25% or less of the battlemap.

So our goal in making combats challenging and thrilling, regardless of party level, is to polymorph battlefields into puzzles and interesting choices that pull players out of tactical ruts.

The 3 Key CombatScape Layers

Here’s my layered approach you can use to add more gameplay to your battle maps:

  • Layer 0: The Base Map. We start with a base map we draw or choose.
  • Layer 1: Movement. We add routes, hazards, and obstacles so players face tough choices as soon as we roll init.
  • Layer 2: Position. We introduce spots on the map that offer tactical advantages, motivating combatants to fight over valuable ground.
  • Layer 3: Interaction. We populate the map with destructibles – objects for combatants to exploit.

When you stack these layers, we truly shape the battlefield and add tremendous gameplay depth.

Dive Deeper With The GM’s Log

I just kicked off a brand new 5-part series on mastering CombatScapes and each layer.

The series is part of The GM’s Log, my new premium weekly tutorial newsletter focused on solving one GM Job To Be Done at a time.

GM’s Log #5 Movement: Control Where Combat Happens just went out this morning. It dives into Layer 1, showing you how to make movement a fun and disruptive tactical choice.

If you’re ready to make your battles more dynamic, subscribe to The GM’s Log via the CampaignCraft tier on Patreon, Substack, or ThriveCart.
