My Weird d20 Ritual
I recently traded emails with a GM where we were talking about rolling dice, and this reminded me about a time in high school when I stole a fellow player’s d20. High crime indeed!
We were playing C3 The Lost Island of Castanamir. A guy named Jamie was GMing. And I quite liked another player’s little red d20.
So I picked it up and got a 20!
Roll again. Another 20.
Did it a third time. Then a fourth!
Missed the fifth, but I rolled another 20 on the 6th roll.
With five 20s rolled in six tosses, my friend said the die was destined to be mine. The whole group was in a frenzy.
I gave one of my d20s to my friend in exchange, and the little red die has remained in my dice bag ever since.
Since that day, I’ve not rolled more than three 20s in a row on any polyhedron, but that little die still rolls high for me when I need it. Other people have tried rolling it, but no luck. I think maybe someone cast Quantum Entangle on the die and I.
And also since that time, whenever I get a new dice set, I roll the d20 first, hoping for another crazy streak.
In RPG shops, if there are individual dice out for purchase, I’ll roll the d20s. And if a player doesn’t mind others using their dice, I’ll often pick up their d20 and roll it.
Someday…someday….
