Crafting Legendary Magic Items
Hola Game Master!
GM’s Log #9: How to Build Legendary Magic Items was just published, and it cloaks my atomic unit of prep in the guise of juicy loot.
What started as a quick way to outline NPCs in the 2010s has become my universal GM tool for instantiating any kind of game piece: NPCs, Locations, Items, Encounters, Adventures. Even my World Seed and Campaign Seed formats use the 3-Line Blocks method.
What makes the tool so useful is it covers three key details that help you GM any game piece:
- Describe it.
- Decide what it’s doing.
- Make it valuable to the story.
Armed with the first two answers, I can easily introduce a game piece into play and GM it smoothly on its turn.
And to understand how to add story value, look at the classic board game Risk. My friend says there are two strategies: Coconut and Rock. Coconut means you put all your armies along borders to hold continents for that sweet round-end bonus. Rock means you have armies distributed fairly evenly in every country so it’s hard knocking you out of the game.
The 3-Line Block is a Rock strategy for GMs. Instead of prepping only a few game pieces in great detail, leaving all others undefined with name only, each NPC, location, and item now answers our three critical questions with little extra effort.
We no longer maintain a thin, brittle, stressful script of material. Instead, everywhere the characters turn, your world presents interesting options.
For the last fact, the one about story value, give the piece one urgent problem, even if it’s a minor magic item you might want to become legendary in your campaign.
Then, as a quick hack for instant motivation, roleplay, and conflict, we give the game piece a goal or impulse to get their problem solved.
In GM’s Log #9, I turn a banal Amulet +1 into something designed to become legendary through gameplay, The Amulet of Soaring Hope.
As an inanimate, non-sapient object, an amulet doesn’t have goals or mobility. So I gave it a flaw that blocks a wondrous power. The players must discover the item’s secret, quest to fix the flaw, and unlock a cool new feature they can use against the villain.
Suddenly, a boring magic item has a story arc and becomes a recurring game piece that deals out interesting choices.
Legendary!
