How To Fix A Dull Setting (Without Writing More Lore)

A great way to craft and maintain a consistent atmosphere without the heavy prep.

I’m experimenting with a Sensory Bible for my Obsidian Invictus campaign to solve a specific problem. How to keep the vibe consistent without writing a tome of lore?

One of my first steps was creating a Sensory Bible for the city, which is home base to the party. What does the place feel like? What are the status colours on display, smells that hit you upon entering, or unspoken rules of the architecture?

My Sensory Bible Page in Campaign Logger has six sections:

  1. Visual Language (Sight)
  2. Tactile Reality (Touch)
  3. Atmosphere (Smell & Sound)
  4. Vibes (Themes)
  5. Dangers (Daily Environment)
  6. Anti-Canon (What It’s Not)

For example:

  • Anti-Canon (Not High Fantasy): No singing bards in tights, no clean medieval fairs, no shiny knights in plate armour.
  • Visual Language (Palette): Muted, sickly beauty. Desaturated pastels (bruised purple, dusty rose, pale mint, oxidized copper, sulfur yellow). No primary colours.
  • Vibes (Arrogant Decay): The rich pretend the world isn’t ending. They throw parties in the volcano’s throat. High fashion meets impending doom.

I have two key use cases for this:

Use #1. Maintaining Strong Themes

The Sensory Bible acts as a design guide. My Razor (a decision-making filter) for the campaign is Rome (3rd Century) meets Thundarr the Barbarian meets Mad Max.

This helps me design dungeons, factions, and plots that feel thematically and viscerally connected.

Use #2. Mood Board

I’ve imported my Sensory Bible into AI and am creating a number of proof of concept images. These visuals help me fine-tune my creations, descriptions, and maps.

I upload these images directly into my Campaign Logger pages. This creates a visual dashboard so I can instantly get into character while prepping and GMing.

The Mood Board also prompts world building. For example, I’ll spot an architectural detail and think about:

  • Why is this here?
  • How was it created?
  • Is this decoration, status symbol, or functional?

Putting This Into Practice

Here’s how I put these use cases to work:

  • Prepare to Improvise: I prefer themed generators in Campaign Logger over writing pages of lore. The Sensory Bible fuels these. For example, my NPC generator outputs characters wearing on-theme silks or rusted scrap based on palette and vibes.
  • Easy Descriptions: When characters venture into different parts of the city, I don’t need to think hard. I can bring up the Mood Board and instantly get a feel for the environment, letting the visuals reduce cognitive load.
  • Session 0: Before I develop more than the Minimum Viable Setting, it must pass the player interest check. Using the Sensory Bible to quickly generate 3–4 vibe images for Session 0 ensures players know exactly what they’re getting into. (Thanks to @ExileInParadise for this “It’s not Alien” tip.)

It’s Your Turn: Give Your Campaign a Quick Vibe Check

I’ve built this template into Campaign Logger so you don’t have to start from scratch.

  1. Open a Log and find Template – Sensory Bible in the Generators panel on the right.
  2. Paste it into a Log Entry.

Answer the three creative spark questions I’ve added to each section.

My WIP

My Obsidian Invictus setup. Notice the palette and atmosphere sections. These mood filters help every NPC and location feel like it belongs in the same decaying, volcanic setting.
