Colony & Outpost Creation Checklist

I’ve got a great checklist for you today. @Exile In Paradise, a fantastic mod helping fellow GMs in my Discord, shared with me a great list of AI generated questions and details for creating colonies, outposts, and settlements in space.

This is in response to Orbital Trouble: d12 Space Outpost Hooks. I normally don’t spit out AI lists in this newsletter as you can just go to AI and get that yourself. But Allen is a scifi expert, and author of the Chronology RPG. If he says a list is good, I’m going to take a closer look at it.

I wouldn’t aim to answer every question, though doing so would surely result in a detailed and deep homebrewed setting.

Instead, I see it as a list of infinite adventure hooks. Each question can form the basis of multiple conflicts and plots. All we do is add What If…

For example: What transportation systems are present (city networks, ground vehicles, orbital and space craft)?

Great question. What If…

  • The systems are being sabotaged?
  • System expansion results in a strange discovery?
  • Corrupt officials are stealing so much that transportation is now unreliable and unsafe?

Also, if your outpost is a recurring setting, you could answer one new question from the checklist for every session so the place always reveals something interesting, new, and hopefully exciting to players.

Use the questions below to spark What If conflicts for and new details next session:

Foundations

  • Founding as an outpost or settlement (when, by whom, and why?).
  • What is the current population size and demographic composition?
  • What kind of government or leadership system is in place (democratic, autocratic, corporate-run, etc.)?
  • Flag, logo, motto. How do these symbols reflect the colony’s culture or purpose?
  • Is it thriving, declining, or abandoned? Why?
  • When did it transition to colony status (key milestones, conflicts, or breakthroughs)?
  • What generational timeline defines this colony (e.g., first settlers, current leadership)?
  • Are there signs of corruption, factionalism, or unrest?

Geography & Infrastructure

  • What are the key environmental conditions (gravity, atmosphere, weather)?
  • Are there wilderness zones, harsh terrains, or unique ecosystems?
  • What are the major settlements or faction zones and their locations?
  • Are there distinct districts or neighborhoods with specific functions or cultures?
  • What transportation systems are present (city networks, ground vehicles, orbital and space craft)?
  • Are there spaceports, communication hubs, or satellite systems?
  • What facilities support daily life (housing, sanitation, power generation)?
  • Are there specialized installations (research labs, military bases, religious sites)?

Economy & Resources

  • What are the colony’s primary resources (minerals, plants, water)?
  • What exports and imports define the colony’s economy?
  • What industries dominate the economy (agriculture, manufacturing, research)?
  • Are there active trade routes, marketplaces, or black markets?
  • Is there a unique currency or barter system?
  • How stable is the economy?

Culture & Society

  • How have the inhabitants adapted to their environment (e.g., physically, socially)?
  • What are the prevailing customs, traditions, or daily practices?
  • How do colonists balance work, leisure, and survival?
  • What languages are spoken? Are there unique dialects?
  • What religions or belief systems exist, and are they peaceful or divisive?
  • What events or festivals bring the community together?
  • Are there historical anniversaries or ceremonies?
  • Who are the key figures (leaders, patrons, underworld bosses)?
  • What factions operate openly or covertly within the colony?

Technology & Equipment

  • What types of ground vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, and spacecraft are available?
  • Are there specialized vehicles (mecha, interface vehicles, power armor)?
  • What level of weaponry is allowed (personal, military, industrial)?
  • Are there unique tools or artifacts significant to the setting?
  • How advanced is the colony’s technology? Are there AI, automated systems, or holographic networks?

Challenges & Threats

  • What political or military conflicts shape the colony?
  • Are there rival factions, external threats, or alliances?
  • What medical facilities and services are available?
  • Are there significant diseases, toxins, or microorganism threats?
  • How prevalent are smuggling, piracy, or crime syndicates?
  • Are there notable black-market trades or illegal activities?
  • What natural hazards (storms, solar flares, tectonic activity) affect the place?
  • Are there unique challenges (alien wildlife, radiation, resource scarcity)?

Exploration

  • What are the notable locations within the colony (monuments, ruins, battlegrounds)?
  • Are there hidden secrets or off-limits areas?
  • What is the colony’s location within the broader star system?
  • Are there nearby outposts, stations, or colonies?
